I just wanted to add that a great message board with tips on caring for cloth diapers is at www.motherease.com. They have a cloth diaper forum and a buy/sell forum. I use all motherease diapers and have never had a leak, and found they were more leakproof than disposables. I will also have two in diapers come July and I use a one size diaper which can be used from birth through potty-training, so it will make things easy and affordable! I also would recommend to read into how to wash the diapers, as its important not to use too much detergent and to find a detergent that works best for you with your water type/wash routine. I use a homeade solution of simple green and washing powder that I found here on the motherease forum. Its cheap and leaves no residue or build-up, so you don't have to strip the diapers often. Here is another link about washing cloth diapers.

Hope this is helpful! In my opinion cloth diapering is easy and enjoyable!

I know this is an older thread, and this probably won't help the original poster. But assuming new people will be constantly checking here too. So I decided to add my 2 cents.

I LOVE cloth diapering! So soft, cuddly, wonderful.

Cloth diapering these days is no harder than disposable diapering. It's the washing instead of throwing away that gets people. But even that is easy and convenient enough. And because CD is so much better for your baby, the environment, and your pocketbook, it is worth it.

As for rashes, you shouldn't have a problem as long as you don't leave your child in wet or soiled diapers too long or unless he is sick. (Diarrhea can lead to rash.) I used Hyland's Calendula Ointment to clear up any rash baby may get. I am much more concerned with the chemicals in the disposable diapers causing health problems.

I prefer a shaped diaper, that is not an all-in-one, and a wool wrap. But I've used just about all types of diapers and covers in my 30 years of CDing my babies, (and siblings and babysitting before that.) My faves are hemp/organic cotton blend diapers, with heavy cotton flannel my next choice. I like the option of pinning on the diaper if I want them to go "coverless". Velcro/aplix or snaps are OK, but snaps are the least adjustable, and velcro/aplix eventually wears out or 'goops' up. It never lasts as long as a good quality diaper it's attached to. Since I usually put the diaper in a wrap, the diaper doesn't need any type of fastener, just long enough sides to pin if I want.

The wool wraps are by far my first choice. They are a natural fiber that wicks wetness away from baby, but are also some what naturally water resistant (i.e. don't leak, but still breathe). They are expensive, but you don' t need many of them since you don't have to wash them real often, since they are also naturally disinfecting. Just hang them to dry if they are wet, not soiled. They also last much longer.

I have more tips and info on CDing in an article on my website (if I'm allowed to post a link here. If not, I'm sorry moderators.) The article contains more info on washing, traveling, liners, wipes, and reasons for CD.

BTW, I use cloth for mama too. You wouldn't believe the difference in feel. Yes, you can buy them - probably not in regular stores, but health food type stores should have Glad Rags and other brands. You can find them on the internet also. Or make them yourself, much cheaper and super simple to do.

OK, so I have been reading this topic and have been interested in cloth diapering for a while, just haven't made the plunge yet. But, I think we are ready. :D So, my baby girl is 3 1/2 months old and is only 9 1/2 pounds. She is long....So, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on diapers and covers to fit her...I was looking at a website called Parentingbynature.com (it is in Canada) and they have all kinds of cloth diapers. I can't decide which would be better, the all-in-ones with inserts or cloth diapers and then covers. Any suggestions/advice would be great! Also, where is the cheapest place to get them?

From the research I've done, everyone says buy a couple different types and brands to get an idea of what you like before spending a lot on one type/brand. Good thing about cloth is that if you don't like them and they're gently used, they have a good resale value so even if you buy a few you can't stand, a place like diaperswappers.com would be a good place to then sell them off. What you hate, is often times something someone else loves.

I used all in ones and I LOVED them. From newborn to toddler. I actually don't know if I would have persisted if I had to deal with more than one "thing". All in ones are just as simple as disposables except you wash them. You don't have a separate cover, you don't have to insert anything, just wash 'em and wear 'em! Easy peasy! I bought 36 so that I could have a full load in the washer and still have a decent number left to use while I got the laundry washed and dried. My only complaint about the ones I used was the velcro tabs gathered fabric/threads in it, which was annoying to get out. I think they were called Baby Love or something like that. I bought them online from a Canadian distributor and the total cost was about $500.00. CHEAP!
