I know this is an older thread, and this probably won't help the original poster. But assuming new people will be constantly checking here too. So I decided to add my 2 cents.
I LOVE cloth diapering! So soft, cuddly, wonderful.
Cloth diapering these days is no harder than disposable diapering. It's the washing instead of throwing away that gets people. But even that is easy and convenient enough. And because CD is so much better for your baby, the environment, and your pocketbook, it is worth it.
As for rashes, you shouldn't have a problem as long as you don't leave your child in wet or soiled diapers too long or unless he is sick. (Diarrhea can lead to rash.) I used Hyland's Calendula Ointment to clear up any rash baby may get. I am much more concerned with the chemicals in the disposable diapers causing health problems.
I prefer a shaped diaper, that is not an all-in-one, and a wool wrap. But I've used just about all types of diapers and covers in my 30 years of CDing my babies, (and siblings and babysitting before that.) My faves are hemp/organic cotton blend diapers, with heavy cotton flannel my next choice. I like the option of pinning on the diaper if I want them to go "coverless". Velcro/aplix or snaps are OK, but snaps are the least adjustable, and velcro/aplix eventually wears out or 'goops' up. It never lasts as long as a good quality diaper it's attached to. Since I usually put the diaper in a wrap, the diaper doesn't need any type of fastener, just long enough sides to pin if I want.
The wool wraps are by far my first choice. They are a natural fiber that wicks wetness away from baby, but are also some what naturally water resistant (i.e. don't leak, but still breathe). They are expensive, but you don' t need many of them since you don't have to wash them real often, since they are also naturally disinfecting. Just hang them to dry if they are wet, not soiled. They also last much longer.
I have more tips and info on CDing in an article on my website (if I'm allowed to post a link here. If not, I'm sorry moderators.) The article contains more info on washing, traveling, liners, wipes, and reasons for CD.

Yes, you can buy them - probably not in regular stores, but health food type stores should have Glad Rags and other brands. You can find them on the internet also. Or make them yourself, much cheaper and super simple to do.
